We were up and out the door by 7:30 this morning. Final good bye’s and we boarded our bus for the 8 hour drive to Prague.
Road time was more like 7 but with rest stops and lunch stops it was close 8 hours clock time.
Much of the drive was across the great Hungarian plane – a large flat fertile cropland that makes Oklahoma look mountainous. There wasn’t a lot to see other than crops and woods with the occasional town, so we napped and read.
At about 10:00 we crossed from Hungary into Slovenia and shortly thereafter spotted Bratislava.
About an hour later we crossed the river that marks the border between Slavakia and the Czech Republic.
Arriving in Prague we checked into our hotel (the Art Nouveau Palace – a 5 star (read ostentatious) hotel in the center of the city), got settled into our room and had an early dinner in the hotel dining room.
After dinner it was time to do a bit of exploring so we walked up the hill and over to Wenceslaus square.
This open space is 820 yards long and is the site of large demonstrations over the years, including the 1989 Velvet Revolution that ushered in the downfall of communist rule in the Republic.
Sadly the square is currently undergoing a significant renovation so there are construction barriers and fencing all over the place.
Here’s a picture of what it looks like when it’s more open.
At the head of the square is a statue of the good king himself.
Behind him (across the road) is the Czech National Museum.
We didn’t drop by this evening.
Strangely we were tired, so we retired.
Tomorrow is a busy day with morning and afternoon excursions as well as a folklore dinner in the evening.
So bed sounds like a good idea.
Till then…
