GET 24 – Day 9 – 8/24/24 – Koblenz and the Middle Rhine

By the way, We are on a ship named the Viking Egdir.
Egdir is identified in Norse mythology as the watchman of Jötunheimar, home of the Jötnar (or giants) and one of the nine realms in Norse cosmology. He is also believed to have been the herdsman who cared for the offspring of the mythological wolf Fenrir. But he is most well-known for his role in Ragnarok—signaling the Jötnar for the final, epic battle with the strum of his harp.

We woke up this morning and opened our curtain to this:

The massive statue is William I, first emperor of the unified German state.

The location, at the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine Rivers, is titled the German Corner (Deutsches Eck), a place of significance in the history of Germany and particularly the Rhineland.

Following breakfast we were off, up the hill to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress,

There we were met by our guide, Mr. John Humphrey, an engineer sent from England in 1828 to surreptitiously study the structure and defenses of the fortress.

Following the tour we had the opportunity to wander for a bit before returning.

We returned by way of the tram across the river.

Down at the lower level we met our bus that took us to where our boat had temporarily moored.

Back on board we headed directly up to the Sun Deck to claim a table in the shade for our afternoon of Scenic Sailing in the middle Rhine. This section of the Rhine has 21 named castles along with numerous riverside villages and untold acres of vineyards. Here are some of the highlights.

We had a bit of time before the 6:45 port talk so Cheryl and I engaged Pam and PJ in a game of Shut Up Orville while we waited.

Following the Port Talk it was time to eat again (sigh).

While at dinner we passed this grand edifice. No idea what it is.

After dinner we returned to the lounge for a rousing game of ‘Family Feud – Viking Style’. We were given answer sheets, Marie read a series of questions. and our answers were compared to the answers given by 100 previous viking guests. Our score on each question was the number of the prior guests giving the same answer.
It was a bit tough to ‘read the room’. “Name a singer with one name.”: The top answer was Cher – as you’d expect from the Viking demographic. But “Name one thing you never leave your house without.” was Cell Phone. Not what we expected.
Still we did OK, out of the ‘money’ (the prize was a Viking Brochure signed by the crew and a package of stroopwaffles) but we had fun.

Then it was to bed, to sleep, to dream, to wonder what tomorrow would bring.

Till then…
