Day 8 – 7/8/2019 – Kinderkijk

Another slow morning. The first event following breakfast was the 10:00 “disembarkation talk” – telling us how to leave the ship, selling us half-price vouchers for futures cruises, showing us slide/video presentations of highlighted trips, etc.

Our cruise director Daniel telling us how to get off

Following lunch we took a nap (the morning being so stressful) instead of packing. We’ll do that in the morning.

Then we read until we docked in Kinderdijk (children’s dike). From there we joined a walking tour of a set of UNESCO World Heritage Dutch windmills.

Good thing I forgot my drone

Miller (These people all work for, or volunteer for the wind mill education center that runs this set of mills.)
We’ll, that’s one way to build a bike rack.

We got to see the inside of a working mill. These mills all have the purpose of lifting water – a meter at a time.
The mill drives this water wheel that scoops the water up to a new level.
Our tour guide explaining how the miller rotates the cap of the mill when the wind changes.

I asked why the mills don’t use an Archimedes screw. Our guide told me that one mill actually has one. It was built in the 1860’s. But by that time they were also building this steam powered pumping station (that uses 3 of the screws) so they didn’t see the need to retrofit the old mills.

This land makes Oklahoma look mountainous.

Back on the boat we cast off for Amsterdam and skipped the farewell cocktail party but arrived in time for the final dinner celebration.

We lingered over wine until it was time for Bill and Madeline to head for bed. (They leave the sip at 4:30 tomorrow morning to head to the airport.)

As dinner ended we were passing thru the last lock on the trip. This is how close we were to the wall.

Cheryl and I vacate our state-closet by 8:00 so we’ll enjoy one last breakfast on board before we venture off into Amsterdam.

So…that’s the cruise.

Cheers,
R

  1. Wow. This was one cool day. I liked these details- the high top wooden shoes and the crazy narrow lock especially!
