Day 7 – 9/26/2019 – On to the South Rim

We were told that the “lazy” part of our tour was over. Today begins the “active” part.

So we checked out of our Sedona hotel and took off for the Grand Canyon.

We headed toward Flagstaff up Oak Creek Canyon. The canyon follows a major fault line and we talked about the differences in geology and plant life on the different sides of the canyon.

The next stop was the Cameron Trading Post – one of the oldest and largest on the Navajo Nation.

Arriving at the National Park we proceeded to Mather point for sack lunches and a first view.

We also learned about Mary Coulter, the architect of many of the best structures in the park.

Mary Coulter’s watchtower is at Mather Point

We took the opportunity to check out the inside of the tower. Thought Coulter was an exacting and uncompromising project manager she also had a touch of whimsy.

The clouds were gathering and rain was in the forcast so we headed straight to the “Village” for a brief tour and historical talk on the El Tovar Hotel, Hopi House, Studio Lookout, and the Kolb Studio.

Before the rain started we got a couple of photos.

Love shooting the canyon on a cloudy day!
Bright Angel Trail
We got some interesting shots after the rains came as well.

When the rain came in earnest we retreated to the El Tovar to await its (rather quick) end. Then we proceeded on.

We had a little time to spare so Randy took the opportunity to hike on the Bright Angel trail.

Here his is finishing his hike.

We sampled the park’s shuttle bus system, got checked into our rooms at Yavapai Lodge, rested for a bit, and reassembled for dinner.

The evening was free, but the rain had returned with a vengeance, so we retreated to our room to read and complain about the wifi speed.

Tomorrow is another fun-filled day so till then,
