Day 4 – June 22: Newport

The first activity of the day was to move.

While we were on the coast we really wanted to visit the Newport Aquarium. It’s smaller than some, but for our money we think it’s the best.

So after breakfast we packed up and drove down the coast to Newport

Arriving at about lunch time we made the obligatory stop at Mo’s

Refreshed by great seafood we headed for the aquarium.

We spent a couple of hours there then checked into our motel.

Then it was back to the road – this time looking for great tide pools. Low tide being shortly after 6:00 pm we had our timing pretty well down.

Following a misadventure or two we finally arrived at Cape Perpetua.

The tide pools were there. We saw wildlife, but not as much as we had seen in the past. What we did see was lots of algae – enough to significantly reduce the availability of oxygen in a pool. I remembered that this type of occurrence was something scientists predicted as ocean temperatures rose. It’s a shame that there are still people who deny the existence and extent of global warming and the human activity that is exacerbating it. Why must we bury our heads in the sand while the planet suffers? I suppose we will eventually learn the truth but how much irreversible damage will be done by then?

By the time we got back to Newport it was 9:00. We had ordered pizza from the road and we picked it up and took it back to the motel for a late supper.

  1. I love how this is now a “misadventure” – “hardly worth mentioning” – “no problem at all” – “we didn’t almost just run a trailer off a precarious one-lane logging road and die”

    1. Hey, Chris was back there watching very carefully to make sure the trailer didn’t haul me down the mountain. I felt quite safe – even though I wasn’t with everyone else 150 yards up the road!
