Day 3 – 1/4/2022 – Tortola

Up at an uncivilized hour as we docked at Road Town on the Island of Tortola (Spanish for “Turtle”)

After a quick breakfast (sorry, no food photos this morning) we donned ‘wet hiking’ gear…

…and wandered down the dock…

to meet our group for our excursion to Virgin Gorda (The Fat Virgin) – Columbus saw the highest hill and declared that it looked like a pregnant lady, hence the ‘fat’. Virgin because it’s one of the British Virgin Islands.

Tortola is a particularly dry island

Today’s excursion was a tour thru ‘the Baths’ – a pathway thru/under/around extremely large boulders – some of which was in water.

This is what the rocks look like from the sea side

Following our trek thru the Baths we had the opportunity to hang out on the beach.

We read, tried to lose our footing in the waves, and chatted with a nice couple from New Jersey (properly socially distant, of course).

Time to head back to the bus – wending our way thru the rocks

Eventually (after enjoying a cup of rum punch) it was time to be ferried back to the ship. Back on board we grabbed lunch at the ‘Living Room Bar’ – excellent open-faced sandwiches (Shrimp for Cheryl, Roast Beast for me) and headed to our stateroom for a bit of relaxation/reading/blogging/napping.

4:00 on a Viking Ship is tea time so we made our way down to the ‘Wintergarden’ for formal tea.

Wintergarden
Tea and such. Cheryl had White Mango tea while I had some sort of amazing fruit tea.
We were serenaded by the violin and cello duo. Note the foot pad. They used those to advance the page on their iPads. I’m jealous!

Then it was off to the port talk for tomorrow’s destination followed by a lecture on sea creatures of the Caribbean given by the on-board scientist. Dinner followed and (because we’re still adjusting to time and a rocking ship) bed.

Tomorrow is St. Kitts. Till then…
