Day 14 – July 2: Road to Reading

Up early, Breakfast on the road, Heading to the Kilpatrick reunion in Reading Pennsylvania.

Choosing not to take the “direct” route (thru Chicago and Pittsburg) we headed straight east, crossed into Canada at Port Huron, Michigan (at which point we added Lake Huron to our list of Great Lakes seen).

and drove across Ontario

to Niagara Falls. (along the way adding Lake Ontario – #4)

Ontario is, well, just like Michigan except that they use the metric system.

After a brief stop to view the falls (Not as high as Shoshone falls in Idaho, but with LOTS of water, and lots of tourist trappy stuff) we headed south, thru the Allegheny mountains toward Reading and the Kilpatrick reunion.

And yes, we did catch a glimpse of Lake Erie as we skirted Buffalo.  We have now seen all five of the Great Lakes.

If you take another look at the map you will note that there is no direct route from Niagara Falls to Reading.

Most of the route is winding two lane road up and down crossing the Allegheny mountains.  It was an extremely interesting trip, beautiful country, lots of trees, fire flies sparkling across fields after dark, small villages and interesting map-work.  I think the biggest problem we had was that much of the trek was after dark.  So by the time we arrived at the reunion hotel – shortly after midnight – we were exhausted from straining to look for deer, bears, and other things that might jump out onto the road in our path.

But we made it, fell into bed and looked forward to the next day – Reunion!
