Today was transit day. We were up, breakfasted, packed, and on the bus to the airport in good time – so good that we arrived at our gate 2 hours early. Oh well, better that then…
The flight was mercifully short and uneventful.
Arriving at Heathrow we used the Steve Smith Airport Trick and found a kind gentleman who threw Steve and his luggage in a motorized wheel chair, hustled us down the concourse, thru customs (such as it was – Brexit hasn’t kicked in yet so we are still in the EU.) and out to the Underground (stopping along the way to supervise our purchase of Oyster cards). Once on the train we sat. We chatted with the flight attendant sitting next to us and with the couple from Sandpoint sitting across from us. It was a pleasant ride. Arriving at our station
we surfaced and walked across the street and down the block to our hotel. The rooms are small but the staff treats us like family and location can’t be beat.
We had just enough time to stretch out and change clothes before it was time to get back on the tube for our trip to St. Paul’s. It was 5:00. We did the sardine thing and executed some fancy maneuvering due to station closures and arrived at the St. Paul’s station in time to grab some supper before the concert.
Then it was off to the cathedral for the evening’s event
This was the final organ recital in a year-long series honoring the American Chapel at the Cathedral and those who died during World War II. There was one piece on the program – the Planets by Gustav Holst. The screen projected images scored by NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio. It was a truly amazing experience. We were even greeted by an astronaut live from the International Space Station.
Following the concert we headed back to our hotel to look at tomorrow and (hopefully) get a good night’s sleep.
Tomorrow we hit London with a vengeance. Till then,
TTFN
This is so mindblowingly cool
