Day 1 – 9/4 – Halifax

First the bad news. The wifi connection at the hotel is go abysmally slow that I haven’t’ been able to upload any pictures. Perhaps at the next hotel things will be better. If so, I’ll update this page. At any rate, here’s what’s been going on.

The first event was check-in with our group leader at 4:00 – which left us with much of the day to explore.

One of our party (no names) left his raincoat at home (in Caldwell) so we checked with the concierge and he showed us how to get to a mall within walking distance. So we took a little hike (about 2.5 miles) only to find out that Canada celebrates Labor Day on the same day as the US – only they actually close things like stores and malls. So other than a little exercise the trip was for naught.

On the way back we did see the small Labor day parade (mostly the Nova Scotia Teachers Union).

After lunch we headed back to the room for a short rest. Then Che and I walked across the street, past the Labor Day festival (apparently there was free food, activities for the kids and such. There was also a really good zydeco band performing.)

to the Natural History Museum. It’s a pretty good museum with much information about the Mi’kmaq Indians.

Mi’kmaq clothing items
Reconstruction of Mi’kmaq family grouping
Excellent samples of Mi’kmaq quill work.
Died porcupine quills are woven in designs into boxes, chair cushions, etc.
Note how the chair on the right (using more colorful chemical dies) is brighter than the chair on the left (using natural dies)

The high point of the museum was Gus the Gopher Tortoise.

Gus is at least 95 years old. He’s quite famous across Canada. We got to see Gus take his afternoon constitutional (and grass-snack).

Back at the hotel we picked up our packets and presented ourselves at dinner for orientation to the program.

Steven (our guide) talked about what we were going to see and handed out our listening devices. Of Course it was fun to witness 35 older adults playing with electronics. Who would have thought otherwise? That done we retired to our beds to anticipate the morrow.
